Understanding cards
First Edition Pokémon Cards
By TCG Emporium Editorial Team · Published 18 October 2026 · Updated 18 October 2026
A 1st Edition Pokémon card comes from the first print run of an English set from the Wizards of the Coast era, and carries the 1st Edition stamp. The stamp ran on ten English sets, from Base Set in 1999 to Neo Destiny. No English card has carried it since.
The stamp is the whole test. If it is not there, the card is not 1st Edition, whatever the listing says.
Which sets have 1st Edition cards
| Era | Sets with a 1st Edition run |
|---|---|
| Original sets, 1999 to 2000 | Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket |
| Gym sets | Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge |
| Neo sets | Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation, Neo Destiny |
| None | Base Set 2, and every English set after Neo Destiny |
Base Set 2 never had a 1st Edition run. It reprinted Base Set and Jungle cards. A Base Set 2 card with a 1st Edition stamp has had the stamp added after printing.
The collector number is the quickest way to tell these sets apart: Base Set cards are numbered out of 102, Jungle out of 64, Fossil out of 62 and Base Set 2 out of 130. Bill, for example, is 91/102 in Base Set and 118/130 in Base Set 2.
What the stamp looks like and where it sits
The English stamp is a solid black circle with a 1 inside and the word EDITION arching over the top. Where it sits depends on the card type:
- Pokémon cards: on the left side, about halfway down, just below the bottom-left corner of the artwork frame.
- Trainer cards: in the bottom-left corner.
- Energy cards: in the top-right corner.
The stamp was printed in the same press as the card, so its position is very consistent. CGC's check on a Pokémon card is that the middle of the T in EDITION lines up with the bottom-left corner of the artwork frame. Compare any stamped card with a confirmed genuine copy of the same card.
Genuine stamps that look wrong
Not every genuine stamp is solid black. CGC documents Base Set 1st Edition stamps that are noticeably grey, on holo and non-holo cards, and says the cause is not known for certain. Graded grey stamp cards are collected as their own variant.
CGC also documents a partial "ghost" stamp on shadowless Pikachu cards from a Base Set theme deck. A former Wizards of the Coast typesetter explained it as a printing artefact that was accidentally left on the plates.
Added stamps and fakes
Because the stamp makes a card worth more, stamps get added to Unlimited cards. CGC's alert on altered Italian cards found:
- ink that did not match the colour or sheen of a genuine stamp;
- stamps sitting slightly raised from the surface;
- laser printer overspray and small creases from the card going through a printer.
Its alert on a fake ghost stamp Pikachu found the stamp too far left, blurred edges under magnification and a rounded O, where the genuine stamp builds it from straight segments. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards covers the wider checks. Confirm a card is genuine before you confirm its printing.
1st Edition, shadowless and Unlimited on Base Set
Base Set had more than one early print run, and only one of them is 1st Edition.
| Stamp | Drop shadow on the artwork frame | |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Edition | Yes | No |
| Shadowless | No | No |
| Unlimited | No | Yes |
A Base Set card with no stamp and no shadow is shadowless, not 1st Edition. Our guide to shadowless Pokémon cards explains that print in detail.
Japanese 1st Edition cards
Japanese cards follow different rules. The Japanese 1st Edition mark ran from Pokémon VS in 2001 to the 20th Anniversary set in 2016. It is a large 1 above the word EDITION between two lines, in the lower right of Pokémon and Trainer cards, and it was not printed on Japanese Energy cards.
CGC notes that Japanese first editions are often more common than their unlimited versions, the opposite of the English pattern.
The earliest Japanese Base Set print, without rarity symbols, is known to collectors as the "No Rarity" print. It is prized, but it carries no 1st Edition stamp. Our guide to Japanese and English Pokémon cards covers the wider differences.
What 1st Edition cards sell for
There is no single figure: it depends on the card and, above all, its condition. At the top end, a PSA 10 1st Edition Base Set Charizard sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions in December 2025, about £412,000 at the 16 October 2026 rate. A higher sale on ALT in October 2026 has been reported but not confirmed by the platform.
Be careful with price sites that do not separate printings. Base Set figures that blend Unlimited and 1st Edition copies can be many times too low for a 1st Edition card. Our guide on how to value Pokémon cards shows how to find sales for the exact printing.
Describing a 1st Edition card
When you buy, sell or swap, write down what you can see:
- set name, collector number and language;
- stamp present or absent, black or grey, and where it sits against the artwork frame;
- holo or non-holo;
- condition, described separately from the printing;
- if graded, the grader, the printing named on the label and the certification number.
Leave a field blank if you are not sure, and say so. "Stamp not checked under magnification" is more useful than a guess.
Questions collectors ask
How do I know if my Pokémon card is 1st Edition?
Look for the 1st Edition stamp: a black circle with a 1 inside and EDITION over the top, on the left side of a Pokémon card below the artwork. No stamp means it is not 1st Edition.
Which Pokémon sets have 1st Edition cards?
Ten English sets, from Base Set to Neo Destiny. Base Set 2 and every later English set have none.
Is a shadowless card 1st Edition?
No. Shadowless is the Base Set print that came after 1st Edition. It has no shadow on the artwork frame, but also no stamp.
Are Japanese 1st Edition cards rare?
Not usually. Japanese 1st Edition cards were printed from 2001 to 2016, and CGC notes they are often more common than the unlimited versions.
