Shadowless Pokémon Cards

By TCG Emporium Editorial Team · Published 18 October 2026 · Updated 18 October 2026

A shadowless Pokémon card is an English Base Set card from the print run after 1st Edition, before a drop shadow was added to the artwork frame. It has no 1st Edition stamp and no shadow along the right-hand edge of the artwork. Shadowless cards exist only in English Base Set, from 1999.

The Base Set print runs

English Base Set was printed more than once, and collectors treat each run as a separate card.

How to check a Base Set card

First, look at the right-hand edge of the artwork frame. On an Unlimited card a dark shadow runs down that edge, making the frame look raised. On shadowless and 1st Edition cards it does not.

Second, look for the stamp on the left side of the card, about halfway down. If there is no stamp and no shadow, the card is shadowless. If there is a stamp, read our guide to First Edition Pokémon cards.

Collector guides also say shadowless cards have thinner HP and attack text than Unlimited. That is a useful second check, best made side by side with a known Unlimited copy.

Basic Energy cards have no artwork frame, so the shadow test does not work on them.

The copyright line is not a reliable test

Many guides say the copyright line separates shadowless from Unlimited. The sources disagree on what each print says, and we found no primary source that settles it. Do not use the copyright line alone.

The one documented change is the later UK print, where the copyright date became 1999-2000. CGC's example is Vulpix, whose HP reads "50 HP" on that print rather than "HP 50".

Only Base Set is shadowless

The drop shadow was added during Base Set's printing, and every later English set was printed with it. So a Jungle, Fossil or Neo card described as shadowless is a mistake or a misunderstanding. Ask the seller what they mean before you buy.

Jungle has its own quirk: some early Jungle cards were printed without the flower set symbol. That is a different variant, not shadowless.

Variants graders document

  • Ninetales "No Damage". A shadowless Ninetales with no damage number printed on its Fire Blast attack.
  • "Black Flame" Ninetales. An Unlimited print with a much heavier shadow than usual, which CGC thinks came early in the Unlimited run.
  • Ghost stamp Pikachu. A shadowless Pikachu from a Base Set theme deck showing part of a 1st Edition stamp, a known printing artefact.

Graded shadowless cards

Graders keep the prints apart. PSA's set registry has a separate Base Set Shadowless set, and a graded card's label should name the print as well as the grade. If a slab says only "Base Set", check the certification number on the grader's own site before paying a shadowless price.

Fakes and altered cards exist at every price point in Base Set. Our guide to spotting fake Pokémon cards covers the checks.

Questions collectors ask

What does shadowless mean on a Pokémon card?

It means the card has no drop shadow along the right-hand edge of its artwork frame. It describes the English Base Set print run between 1st Edition and Unlimited.

Is a shadowless card worth more than Unlimited?

Collectors usually pay more for a shadowless copy than for an Unlimited one in the same condition. Compare sales for the exact print, since some price sites blend the Base Set prints together. Our guide on how to value Pokémon cards shows how.

Are there shadowless Jungle or Fossil cards?

No. Shadowless cards exist only in English Base Set.

Is a shadowless card 1st Edition?

No. A 1st Edition card has the stamp. A shadowless card has neither the stamp nor the shadow.
