Japanese Pokémon Cards

This range is sealed Pokémon Card Game product printed in Japanese for sale in Japan. It is for collectors who want the Japanese printing of a set. Every item will carry a Japanese language label and its official Japanese set code, so nothing here can be mistaken for an English product. Japanese cards are not legal at Play! Pokémon Championship Series events in the UK, so if you want cards to play in tournaments, buy English.

How Japanese sets and products differ from English

Japan releases its own sets under its own names. The official Japanese Pokémon Card Game site files each product under a short code, such as sv2a for Pokémon Card 151 or m2a for Mega Dream ex. We will list each set by its Japanese name, written in English letters, with that code, rather than by the name of an English set that shares some of its cards. Our Japanese and English guide covers how the two lines relate.

Japanese packs do not have one standard size. The official product pages give seven cards in a Pokémon Card 151 pack and five in an Eevee Heroes pack. Shiny Treasure ex, Terastal Fest ex, Mega Dream ex and VSTAR Universe are high class packs, and each holds ten cards. A modern English pack also holds ten.

The official pages give the cards in a pack but not the packs in a box. A modern English main-set booster box holds 36 packs, and there is no reason to assume a Japanese box matches it. We will count the packs in each box before we list it, rather than repeat another seller's figure.

Japanese cards also have a different back from cards in every other language, which settles most questions about play.

Which Japanese products we will carry first

We will start with sealed product from six Japanese sets, listed here from oldest to newest:

Boxes of Pokémon Card 151 and Terastal Fest ex depend on sourcing, so we plan to carry those two as packs only for now. Set pages, such as Shiny Treasure ex, will give the Japanese name, the code and the products we list for that set.

Are Japanese cards legal in UK tournaments

Not at Play! Pokémon Championship Series events. The TCG Tournament Handbook, last revised on 1 September 2026, sets the legal card languages for those events by rating zone. The United Kingdom is in the Europe zone, where the legal languages are English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. At Regional, Special, International and World Championships, players may also use cards in any language legal in their home country, which for a UK player still leaves Japanese out.

The handbook also treats Japanese cards as marked, because their backs differ from those of all other Pokémon cards, and marked cards may not be played at Play! Pokémon tournaments. For other tournaments and League sessions, the organiser or League staff decide which languages are legal. Ask them before you bring Japanese cards. For collecting, none of this matters.

How we will label language

Every product in this range will show its language on the product tile, and again in the product name and the product details. Each listing will also give the set code from the official Japanese site and the cards per pack from the official product page.

We will not describe a Japanese box by the name of an English set, and we will not mix English and Japanese items in one listing. If the language of an item is ever unclear to you, contact us before you order and we will check it.

Common questions

Are Japanese Pokémon cards official

Yes. They are the Pokémon Card Game as printed for Japan, and the official Japanese Pokémon Card Game website publishes what is in each product. Fakes exist in every language, and our guide to spotting fake packs applies here too.

Can I mix Japanese cards into an English deck

At home, that is between you and whoever you play with. At Play! Pokémon events, no. The handbook allows mixed-language decks only where the card backs are consistent, and Japanese backs do not match English ones.

Can my child play with Japanese cards

The text is in Japanese, so a player who does not read it needs a translation of what the cards do. For a child learning the game, start with English cards and our guide on how to play. For opening packs and keeping cards in a binder, the language matters far less.

Are Japanese packs smaller than English packs

Some are. Pokémon Card 151 packs hold seven cards and Eevee Heroes packs hold five. The four high class packs we will stock hold ten, the same as a modern English pack, and every listing will state the count.
